Home Page

The Course Home Page is the first view your students will see when they enter your course.

It's essential to consider the content and desired flow of the student experience.

When you start constructing your course and planning content, it is crucial to consider the optimal structure for your materials.
Take time to determine the following elements:

  • Define the beneficial content that students need in constant
  • Choose an efficient digital delivery method
  • Provide supplementary materials
  • Estimate an access content via a file structure or on a page within Canvas
  • Adopt various activities to support the learners' practice and review the concepts

Create Pages

In Canvas, pages offer a platform where you can integrate content, videos, images, and links to external websites and files. Pages are advantageous in providing students with contextual information and explanations about the shared resources instead of depending solely on the item-by-item format of Modules. Pages function most effectively when used with Modules or connected to other course sections, such as the Syllabus or Homepage.

Pages Suited for

  • Welcome pages
  • Instructor Info Page
  • Weekly Readings
  • Getting Started pages
  • Links to web articles
  • Recorded Lectures
  • Embedded Virtual Tours
  • Zoom Session Launch page
  • Wiki page
  • Resources page

 

Pages Not Suited for

  • Activities requiring submissions or response
  • Activities you want to grade in Canvas

Add and Organize Content 

Canvas has a global navigation menu is located on the left side of every page. Global Navigation links provide quick access to the Courses. Once the instructor discovers the course sites and is familiar with the Manage Dashboard, the instructor can add relevant content and organize materials to improve the student learning experience. 


Regardless of different design methodologies, create course materials generally involves the following ways:

  1. Upload course materials or multimedia files
  2. Create content with the Rich Content Editor
  3. Import or duplicate course content
  4. Integrate an external application or LTI tools like Box, Google, or zoom. 

Upload Materials

Instructors can drag and drop files from a computer into a course.

File Sizes

  • Canvas does not support file uploads larger than 5 GB.
  • Video and audio uploads to Canvas through the media tool can be up to 500 MB in size.

To Add a File:

Method 1:

  1. In the Course Navigation, click the Files link 
  2. Click the Upload button.
  3. Find the file you want to upload and click the Open button

Method 2: 

  1. In the Courses Navigation, choose the Pages, click the Insert.                  
  2. Choose the file type between Link, Image, Media or Document.
  3. Find the file you want to upload and click the Submit button.

Add a file via Drag and Drop

Some web browsers allow you to add files by simply dragging and dropping the files from a file window directly into the Canvas file repository. Or you can choose a file and click submit or open.


Student View Mode

Student View features allow you to observe a course from the same perspective as your students. Activate Student View generated a test student account in your course. Also, the Student view can be activated in your Course Settings. 

Student View Mode provides documents and videos to guide you through the setup.

Publish Course

Faculty must publish a course for it to be visible to students.

Before publishing course materials, complete the CMC_Checklists to verify course settings and privacy considerations.
